Corinne Buie, Class of 2010

Corinne earned seven varsity letters at Edina, four in hockey and three in soccer, was Captain of both teams her senior year, and was the 2010 Athena Award recipient. Corinne was named All-Metro First Team three times, was a 2010 Ms. Minnesota Hockey Finalist and named to the First Team All-State selection in both hockey and soccer. Corinne attended Providence College where she played four years of Varsity hockey. Following college, Corinne continued playing women’s professional hockey for six years, playing in five Championship games and she was named to the NWHL All Star team three times. Corinne recently retired from professional hockey and lives in Boston with her partner Savannah and their English Mastiff, Claudia.

Steve Dove, Athletic Director

In 1993 Steve Dove joined the Edina High School staff as the Athletic Director. Steve oversaw the expansion of Edina’s athletic teams when the Minnesota State High School Athletic League (MSHSL) officially sanctioned Girls Hockey in 1995 and Boys and Girls Lacrosse in 2007. Edina High School also added 45 State Championships to its already impressive list during Steve’s tenure. In 1996, Steve introduced and founded the Athletic Hall of Fame. To date, the Hall of Fame has inducted over 150 incredible athletes, coaches, administrators and boosters to its ranks. Steve lives in Pepin, WI where he and his wife Marianne are the owners/operators of The Pickle Factory Waterfront Grill on Lake Pepin.

Dick Gaughran, Coach

Dick arrived at Edina High School in 1967 as an assistant football, track and wrestling coach and junior high school teacher. Dick aided the 1978 Edina West Cougars win the only MSHSL State Football Championship in Edina history. Dick also coached baseball and taught Drivers Education. After 33 years & over 100 teams Dick retired from Edina in 1982. From 1982-1992 Dick coached baseball in multiple western suburbs, then in 1992, Dick accepted an assistant football coaching position under Mike Grant at Eden Prairie High School where he continues to coach today. In almost 60 years of coaching, Dick has been part of over 146 teams, has won 14 State Championships (11 in Football and three in Baseball). When not on the football field, Dick lives in Jordan with his wife Jan, and likes spending time with his extended family, fishing, hunting, gardening, and playing cards.

Michael Lauen, Class of 1979 East

Michael played Varsity Hockey for three years at Edina East, anchoring its back-to-back state hockey championship teams in 1978 and 1979 and earning All-Conference, All-State and All-American recognition each year. Michael went on to play four years of hockey at Michigan Technological University, played for several NHL farm teams and was called up to the majors for four games, but says “I played against Gretzky and in the Frozen Four; I went over to Finland as part of the junior national team, but what still comes back as my most memorable games are the ones at the state tournament.” Michael is very involved with the Edina community as a member of the Edina Morningside Rotary, Edina Chamber of Commerce and the Building Owners and Managers Association. Michael lives in Edina and spends his free time golfing, traveling and in his kitchen trying new recipes.

Betsy Massopust Johnson, Class of 1999

Elizabeth “Betsy” Massopust was a 3-sport athlete, earning a whopping 11 Varsity letters, five with the Synchronized Swim Team, three with competitive swimming and three with the Nordic ski team, all while also. participating in Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, the Latin Club. Betsy was named to numerous All-conference, All-Metro and All-state teams, was a 4-Time Team MVP winner and was a 6-time team Captain. Betsy attended Princeton University, graduating Cum Laude from the School of Public Policy in 2003, then attended the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, graduating with her medical degree in 2011. Betsy currently lives in Mendota Heights with her husband, Dr. Todd Johnson and their seven children whom she home schools.

Scott Sanderson, Class of 1992

Scott Sanderson played both Varsity tennis and hockey for three years at Edina. Scott won 3rd place in Individual State Tournament as a sophomore, then was back-to-back Individual State Champion in ‘91 & ’92. He helped Edina to a 3rd place State Team title in 1991 and State Championship in 1992. Scott received All Lake Conference honors each year plus All Metro and All State as a senior. In hockey Scott earned 3 varsity letters and received All Conference recognition twice. Scott was a team Captain for both teams and graduated Edina with honors. Scott played college hockey at the University of Wisconsin-Madison helping the team win the WCHA Championship in 1995. He was a University of Wisconsin Athletic Board Scholar all 4 years, & WCHA and All Big 10 Academic All-American. Scott then attended the University of Minnesota Medical School to study Ophthalmology. He graduated in 2002 and joined the McCannel Eye Clinic in Edina. Scott lives in Edina with his wife, Kerry Fulda, and their two sons, Owen and Ben. When not helping to coach his boy’s teams, Scott can be found playing golf, tennis and hockey or traveling with his family.

Jeff Sorem, Class of 1992

Jeff was a 3-year Varsity hockey player, 2-time All-Conference recipient and a Senior Captain. He was also named to the All-Metro and the Maroon-and-Gold All Star Series teams. Jeff and his father, Mel, are one of very few father-son duos to play for Coach Willard Ikola at Edina. Jeff also played spring sports, earning an additional two Varsity letters in Golf and one in Baseball for a total of six. Jeff went on to play four years of hockey at Yale University while studying Economics and earning Academic All-Ivy team honors his Senior year. Jeff returned to Minnesota and began a career with Wells Fargo. He and his wife Lindsay live in Edina with their 2 children, Jack (16) and Grace (13). Jeff is active with the Edina Hockey Association, Mount Olivet Church and the Edina Booster Club. He is an avid golfer and pond hockey player, even being featured in the 2008 documentary film, “Pond Hockey”.

Mike Sullivan, Class of 1979 West

Mike Sullivan was the starting running back for the State Champion 1978-79 Edina football team. Mike was the nucleus of the team’s “three yards in a cloud of dust” offense and averaged more than 100 yards per game, amassing 1512 total yards and setting a single season school record. His senior year Mike was named to the Lake Conference and Minnesota State All Star teams. Mike also played hockey and ran track. His senior year, Mike captained the Edina West hockey team, helping them win the 1979 Lake Conference Championship over cross-town rivals Edina East. In total, Mike played on 9 consecutive teams and earned six Varsity letters at Edina.Mike continued his studies at the University of Minnesota, graduating from the Carlson School of Management in 1983 and beginning a successful career in business and management. Mike currently lives in North Carolina with his wife Nancy and near his two grown children Avery and Missy. Mike enjoys cooking for his family, connects with his Edina West teammates for an annual golf weekend and remains active with hockey playing in local leagues in the Raleigh-Durham area.
